I like to read and hear the things that the experts in any field have to say. They speak from a position of personal knowledge, and their observations are most often right on the mark.
Camille Paglia is a poet and expounds some rather controversial opinions about many things. But she is right on when she says, “Modern bodybuilding is ritual, religion, sport, art, and science, awash in Western chemistry and mathematics. Defying nature, it surpasses it.”
Ronnie Coleman (Mr. Olympia) said, “Just because your triceps have fallen behind your biceps, doesn’t mean you should back off your triceps workouts.” He also said, “The single biggest mistake that most beginners make is putting 100% of their effort into the positive (concentric) part of the rep, while paying no attention to the negative (eccentric) segment.”
Dorian Yates, who was Mr. Olympia six times, said, “Sell yourself short on nutrition and you’re selling yourself short on maximizing your physique development.”
Robert Cheeke is one of the most famous vegan bodybuilders. He said, “One of the greatest experiences in life is achieving personal goals that others said would be, ‘impossible to attain.’ Be proud of your success and share your story with others.”
This wouldn’t be complete without an Arnold Schwarzenegger quote, so here it is: “The only way to be a champion is by going through these forced reps and the torture and pain. That’s why I call it the torture routine. Because it’s like forced torture. Torturing my body. What helps me is to think of this pain as pleasure. Pain makes me grow. Growing is what I want. Therefore, for me pain is pleasure. And so when I am experiencing pain I’m in heaven. It’s great. People suggest this is masochistic. But they’re wrong. I like pain for a particular reason. I don’t like needles stuck in my arm. But I do like the pain that is necessary to be a champion
